I have a '93 turbo auto and love it to pieces. I may be a boring old f*rt now but have owned or driven stuff from Morgan drophead, TR5, Honda S800 and AC Ace to Lagonda Rapide. As far as the driving experience is concerned, just make sure it's wearing decent tyres and send her out to convince herself! If she hates it after that, fair enough.
Yes, the automatic can need repair or replacement but so can manual boxes and clutches, and many repairs can be carried out without removing the gearbox.
If, on the other hand, you're talking about a normally-aspirated 2-litre car, it's a different situation. Once again lovely to drive but maybe an older person's type of thing (which is where we came in).
