When you said you tried to access it from the wheel well, I assume you tried to reach through the hole in the wheel liner where the driveshaft comes through.
My recommendation, if you haven't tried it, is to remove the wheel well liner. It will give you MUCH better access to the alternator, albeit the front of the alternator. Removing the liner takes about 20 minutes. If you have an electric screwdriver or drill, I recommend getting an extension that allows you to put on 1/4 socket drive.
I figure it will take you about as much time to remove the intake plenum, which is the big thing with runners that attaches to the engine. I would avoid removing that because the risk of getting it back together right. Yes, it should be absolutely fine. But it's a haven for potential vacuum leaks, especially at the four short, fat hoses that connect the plenum to the cylinder head intakes.
