I agree about the overabundance of bass.
Pressing the EQ BAL button for more than two seconds engages or disengages the Loudness function (louder reproduction of lower frequencies). A display indicator appears when the function is engaged.
Also try folding up the rear shelf so it's open half way.
My normal setting is Loudness disengaged, rear shelf half way opened, bass 0, treble +6 and fade Rear 4 (if no one's in the rear seats).
