Here's the deal.
I had my SRS light come on one day for no reason, or so I thought. Went to dealer for Tech II/ISAT, diagnostics using Tech II or ISAT is charged by the hour at a rate of $65/hr. but they got no results, no communication, so there was no charge even though they spent a good 30 minutes. THey told me my module was dead, quoted $1400 for new one. No thanks.
I found a good used one for $65, installed it myself (dealer wanted $200 to install), got the light reset at same dealer at a cost of $16.
They didn't know if it would reset or not since it was a used part with no guarantees that it worked. It took them 10-15 minutes total for the reset, $15 + tax. I've had no SRS faults since and this was almost 1 1/2 years ago.
They are probably quoting you $50 since they don't know what they will run into, faults or no faults, tracing connections, etc. Your light could be on because of a fault in or a faulty SRS sensor, clock spring in your steering wheel (I've heard $250-400 to fix, but could be dealer part + install), bad or no connection somewhere or your SRS module went south.
All you can do is have it checked out and hopefully find the real problem. Periodic resetting ins't the answer.
Good luck!!
