Losing the tachometer suddenly is a sure sign that the CPS is failing. A mechanic should be able to do this job for no more than $350 including the part (it's one hour of labor at the most). Either way, you should absolutely do it yourself because you are already familiar with the procedure of removing the crank pulley. Once the pulley is off, replacing the sensor is simply a matter of removing two screws and routing the new wire across the engine bay.
HOWEVER, you may be in luck - I happen to have in my posession a good working crank sensor which I will sell to you for dirt cheap (email me if you're interested). I replaced my sensor about a year ago. When I bought a used one, the nice (crazy) guy at my favorite Saab junkyard gave me TWO extra sensors he had sitting around (in case I screwed up I guess [?]).
The sensor is actually from a 900, so the wires are too short and will need to be spliced into the originals in order to reach across the engine bay. Otherwise, its absolutely identical. Theres only three wires to splice, and you can't screw up because the wires are exactly the same color.
How do I know splicing will work? Because I'm using a spliced in 900 sensor in my '91 9000T right now and it has been working perfectly for over a year. As long as you are careful about the splicing, I absolutely promise you that it will work. I really have no use for TWO extra sensors, so why not get rid of one and help out a fellow Saaber at the same time?
Email me if you want the sensor and otherwise good luck!
