Signs that your 9000 auto transmission might be dying

Lately (And for the past 10,000 miles honestly) sometimes I have had a floaty sensation while driving in traffic. Almost like the car has disengaged from the transmission and is coasting in Neutral. Is that a facet of how the transmission drives (It very possibly has been like this since before 100K and I never noticed since I wasn't close to 100K), or should I be worried?
The car has never failed to accelerate nicely when I push down on the pedal, but when depressesed half way and driving in traffic I often get a floating sensation. There is no jerking when I depress the pedal furthur though.
For those of you have that have a 9000 Auto Transmission die, please let me know what it felt like.
Others-Is there something that can be done so that the transmission DOESN'T fail? Can flywheels etc. be changed?
Thanks guys.
