I owned a '97 CSE a/t for 6 months (then it was totalled--not my fault) before I owned my current '98 CSE a/t. Both cars had the same number of miles on them when I purchased them (42K), and were in the same mint condition (end-of-lease sales).
The '98 does feel more harsh than the '97 did. I also think that the '98 holds the road much better than the '97 did. I have pushed both cars to the limits, so I do have some sort of a comparison to go on, though the '97 was riding on 15" Michelin MXV4's, and the '98 is riding on 16" Dunlop SP5000's. I know these wheel combo's will make a difference, so the road-holding capability could be attributed to this, but the suspension also plays a part in it as well.
I never had a chance to check the spring color bands or the damper numbers on the '97.
The '98 came with Michelin Pilot's (which I think were oem). The '97 came with the Michelin MXV4's (which I think were oem). Would the fact that Saab shodded the '98 with a much higher-performing tire have anything to do with what type suspension the car had?
As for ride height, I would need to know what it is for a stock (no mods) '97 Aero a/t. I will check mine, as well as look in the owner's manual for what it states. I never took a notice as to any difference in height between the two cars. But, an Aero also looks lower than a CSE because of the lower body-cladding (front/rear valance, side skirts) it has.
Currently, I have poly front control-arm bushings, poly end-link bushings, new oem rubber front sway bar bushings, and poly rear sway bar bushings. The poly did add a little more harshness to the ride, but I do remember noticing how much better the stock '98 handled the road as compared to my once-beloved Midnight Blue Mica '97 (R.I.P.).
