Hey folks,
I'm Karthik in the US - and a new owner of a 5spd 1988 Saab 9000 Turbo. So far so good with the car and I'm looking forward to a good experience with her.
I've been looking around for a forum to help me solve some technical troubles with the car (now and in the future). Am I at the right place?
The question: An instable idle.
The car has been exhibiting very weird idle characteristics. It started off with an idle that would move around occasionally - especially when the clutch when coasting (clutch disengaged or neutral) to a stop. Instead of staying at idle, it would rev up a bit and then slow down on its own.
Yesterday, the problem got pretty bad. The car started consistently idling *really* high. 2k and slightly above sometimes. This was happening on the move and while stationary. I changed the tube connecting the PCV to the intake manifold (it had dry-rotted) and soon after the car changed its behaviour again - but not for the better.
Now, when the car is cold, it behaves ok. But the idle does move around between 1k and 1.5k. But not too suddenly. But, when warmed up and when moving, the idle acts awful. If I'm accelerating through the gears, then if I press the clutch to change gears and hold position, the car almost stalls! While on the move. Drops to 200 or 300 or so. It then catches it, revs to 2k and then settles at 1.3k or so. This behaviour is also consistent. I can get the car do this everytime. However, the car will not do this when stationary. Infact, the revs drop down very slowly even pausing at different positions before dropping further - never dropping below 1k.
The difference between moving and stationary behaviour suggests ECU related problems. So far, I have cleaned the ICV and changed a few vaccuum tubes.
I dont know if this matters, but the previous owner recently put an aftermarket APC and muffler.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Karthik
