The $1800 was a decent price, to begin with. I figure, even with a
bad transaxle, a '92 with an 'immaculate' exterior/interior combo'
has plenty of value left in it. The problem is with the price you paid
for a transaxle rebuild. AFAIK, the best rebuilt transaxles are from
Eriksons', and they go for more than a grand. If you're saying that
someone took out your transaxle, rebuilt it, and re-installed it for
$1000, then with the pinion now whining I'm sorta suspicious of
of the rebuilder. Secondly, I would have never paid $1350 for
a ETS module - there are plenty of them available at salvage yards
for a fraction of that. Finally, with the money you've spent on this
piece-meal approach, you could have bought a whole drivetrain,
with much lower mileage, AND have it installed. I bought a '98
9000 engine/transaxle w/only 10k miles, for $2600, three years
ago - I'm sure they can be had for less (with more mileage, obviously)
now. I would: bring back that ETS unit for $1350, bring back the
transaxle to whoever 'fixed' it and demand some recompense
for your grief, then take that money and locate a low-mileage
drivetrain and drop it in. Chances are, there'll be other issues
that turn up with that '92 drivetrain: ancillaries, balance-shaft
gears, other ETS issues, etc. A newer drivetrain would be
win-win-win-win situation: a better/stronger engine, a better/stronger transaxle, a better/stronger (32 bit) engine management system,
and less miles.
