89 5spd stub shaft, bearing, seal update(long) Posted by DickT [Email] (#1628) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DickT) on Sun, 9 Mar 2003 16:22:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I posted last week for advice on in car removal of the RH stub shaft bearing/seal assembly. The car ran and OK but had a serious oil leak where the intermediate driveshaft goes into the transmission. KeithG and Roman (thank you both) suggested a couple of diagrams but neither showed exactly what was inside. I haven't had much time to work on it, plus it's still cold in my garage. Checked it out yesterday though, and it turns out the procedure is quite simple. After removing the snap ring just inside the transmission case before the seal, I screwed an axle nut on the threads on the end of the stub shaft and used its flange to pull out the shaft with the bearing attached. It's very much like pulling the LH inner driver out of the other side.
A previous owner had done an auto to manual swap but had neglected to change the carrier bracket. This resulted in the driveline establishing a new center of rotation. The cage on the bearing was in little pieces and both races were chewed up. Recovered 10 balls but there may still be one unaccounted for. The inside of the transmission case where the outer bearing race seats is indented .005-.010" on part of one side. Hopefully I can do some reconstructive surgery to keep the new bearing's outer race from spinning. After measuring the old bearing and seal I was able to order generic replacements from a local parts store for about $30. Don't know what dealer price would be.
