Here's what I have in my '93 CSE
Replaced stock Clarion head unit with JVC SH99 MP3 Deck
Replaced rear speakers with inexpensite Pioneer 6x9's
Replaced rear amp with cheap Pioneer 2-chan x 40 watt unit
Built custom 1ft^2 box for Shiva 12-inch sub in trunk
Old 2-channel Carver amp bridged to 1x120 Watts for sub
Most modern head units put out enough power to drive your front speakers, regardless of whether you get new ones or keep stock (which IMHO are very good). Rear speakers also really just provide fill, you don't need to spend a fortune on them. The best places to put your money are in a very nice head unit and your sub/amp.
The only original audio gear in the car is the two front speakers, which continue to sound great, and the wiring from under the passanger seat to the rear speakers. This system was fairly inexpensive, done over some time, and sounds fine for what I paid.
I would suggest foregoing the overpriced speakers Best Buy or Crutchfield sells and getting yours online, there are a variety of companies, adire-audio springs to mind where I got my sub, but there are others. Search past postings for extensive discussions on this topic.
