You didn't state the mileage of your engine. I replaced the timing and balance shaft gears on my 91 at 110k and found a significant amount of wear on the balance shaft gears. I heard several opinions on this BB that Saab installed improperly hardened gears on the early 2.3 engines that, over time, wear, chip and then move throught the oiling system, doing significan damage to the bearings throughout the engine. Based on this worst case scenario, if your engine is high mileage, I would have serious reservations about re-using this block as you may have already been experiencing bearing damage even before the gears finally failed. I hate to darken your already dark situation, but it is a definite factor to consider in your decision.
Good luck,
Dan
