Hi Bob,
When I'm decreasing speed from about 60 mph, as the transmission starts to gear down into third gear it will sometimes (frequently lately) slip out of gear into neutral. I then have to pull over to the side of the road, put tranny into Park for awhile, sometimes into reverse (which usually works) and also flipping back into drive or second or third. Sometimes I also turn off the ignition and leave it in Park for 5-10 minutes. Eventually, it will click into gear again. This can take from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. I have stopped using Drive completely and no only keep the car in 3rd gear. I no longer drive faster than what 3rd gear can handle.

I've talked to a couple of tranny shops and they say "rebuild". My mechanic says the same - he says get rid of the car o send to a tranny shop. My brother (who's an ace mechanic) says (without inspecting the car) that it could be the governor that's somehow stuck. The shifting is also starting to clunk into reverse and third when shifting from Park.

I figure that if I can locate the problem I can fix it (rather than a complete rebuild).

Any thoughts?
