Hi all,
Appologies in advance for a lenghty message.
I have a -91 2,3 non-turbo 9k with 137k miles on the meter. This winter we had some really low temperatures and at one time when it was -15F, I got no heat in the car and the coolant temperature didn't go up at all. I figured the coolant had frozen but had to continue driving for 15 minutes before I could stop (didn't want to be stuck on the highway in that weather). When the car had been standing for about half an hour, I started it again and got heat and the coolant temperature seemed fine. A bit high the first minutes but went down to normal after that. The following days, I lost some coolant whenever I parked the car. Only about a litre or two but it happened almost every day. Then it stopped leaking for weeks and then started again. Never more than a litre or two and.
The leak is distinctly under the water pump so I figure it's time to replace it and I have a few queries.
1. How can I make sure it's the water pump? I've read something about a "weep" hole but don't know where to find it. A picture would be great.
2. Is it very bad for the engine to just keep topping off the coolant until I have changed the water pump, or whatever may be wrong? The water temperature is always OK and I usually dont' drive long distances.
3. How do I check for coolant in the oil? The oil "looks" fine, but how do I make sure there's no coolant in it?
4. Can it be a jammed thermostat that makes the leak so random as it is? I'm thinking maybe sometimes the thermostat works and all is well and sometimes it jams and stops the coolant, builing up pressure and causing the leak? Just a thought.
5. My coolant level lamp never comes on. Any tips on how to mend the coolant level switch?
Well, I'll sit on my hands for a while now and let you rest your eyes. Any help is highly appreciated.
/Ola
