I bought it in 1995 and it was in great shape. We eventually gave the car to our baby sitter this year knowing the she has a safe car to drive our kids in at times.
As Ari said, it needs routine maintainence and periodic parts replacement.
There has been various thing that went other than normal wear items such as brakes, exhaust (about every 5 years for me), etc..
Surprises (but common items for 9000): The direct ignition cassette was leaking oil and was replaced. The fuel pump went one day and stranded my wife. The windshield washer reservoir cracked washing my garage intead. Some check valves in the washer line needed replacement. The ventilation fan controller resistor pack failed leaving only high fan. A stone hit the transmission oil cooler and needed replacement (more an accident than problem). A couple of instrument bulbs went (can be easily replaced if you are handy). The radiator fan thermal switch needed replacement. The upper radiator hose cracked with coolant spilling out (just keep an eye on all hoses, especially on such an "old" car).
The car currently has 105,000 miles or so and still running great with the original engine and transmission. If you can do some of the routine maintainence, even little ones, you will find it to be an excellent car.
No, it isn't as reliable as some other makes but very few car is at this vintage. If the car has been properly maintained, chances are that many of the above items have already been replaced. Just in case, you may also want to get the names of a few good independent Saab mechanics in your area. The car isn't worth much selling, and if it runs good, you may just as well keep it. If it starts giving you trouble, you can always donate it and get a nice tax deduction.
Have fun with you "new" car.
