When the starter/solenoid gets hot, it draws more current in the lead from the switch to the solenoid winding resulting in less voltage across the solenoid activation coil, so the solenoid does not close the contact to the starter motor nor does it engage.
Adding a cheap Ford solenoid fixes this problem by applying the full battery voltage across the Bosch solenoid activation winding, resulting in proper operation of the solenoid, pinion gear and rotation of the starter motor.
Parts needed: #12 wire , 2 solderless connectors , 1 heavy battery cable , Ford style starter solenoid (from a full-sized, V8 equipped car)
Steps:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the battery cable from the battery terminal on the existing solenoid.
3. Remove the ignition wires from the smaller terminal also on the existing solenoid.
4. Use a strip of the #12 wire and the two solderless connectors to connect the two electrical terminals on the Bosch solenoid. This is how the full 12 volts from the battery will be applied to the "S" terminal of the BOSCH solenoid.
5. Install the new solenoid in the remote location of your choice.
(Ground backplate to car body)
6. Connect the battery cable to the "A" terminal of the new solenoid.
7. Use the new additional battery cable to connect the "C" terminal of the Ford solenoid to the starters battery terminal.
8. Connect the ignition wire (yellow line) to the "B" terminal of the Ford solenoid.
9. Re-connect the negative battery cable
