Zeke,
Well, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous and confusing thing!
First, i got ahold of someone at Talifiero, who recommended that if the turbo is blown - walk away from the car, because it means it has been neglected so bad the bottom end is probably shot. I don't believe that is the case with this car. In any case, he didn't recommend substituting the regular turbo for the Aero.
Next, I spoke with someone at Engstrom. He said that the Mitsubishi (Aero) turbo,
is a much more advanced design than the Garrett, and that the connections, etc.
would be completely different, and I would have to downgrade the ECU to a normal
9000, because they are so different in spin up, lag, everything. With the right mods, the Mitsubisshi can reach over 300 hp, the Garrett maxes ~245. Neither of them could pull up prices at the time, so that is still in question. Then I called the local "official" SAAB dealer,
who quoted me $850.00 for a rebuilt AERO turbo with a 12 month warranty - I install. This sounded good to me, but when I had him check what type it was,
he came back and said that there was no Mitsubishi turbo in 97 on the AERO,
that it was just a different Garrett. In fact, they had stopped using the Mitsubishi
years ago, and only in the last year or so began using them again.
So who is right? Something is fishy in Sweden!
Thanks for letting me continue to pick your brain
