coolant temps/healthy cooling system

wow it has been eons since I've posted here, but I've been tinkering with my 'new' Autometer Cobalt coolant temp gauge and I thought I would share some observations.
I tapped into the bypass line that exits the back of the head (and enters directly into the centre section of the turbo). I thought this would be interesting as I would not see the cycling of temps (say if I tapped into the same location as the OEM sender).
with the 87C thermostat and corresponding fan switch, I've been observing 82-84C consistent temperature from the bypass hose that I tapped into. On the good old OEM coolant temp indicator, this corresponds to 1/2 way on hte gauge. This is in hte city, on a warm day (25C) Interesting observations, even though it is a location that sees slightly cooler temps...good to see after 280km the cooling system is functioning well. Also an indicator that the 82C thermostat that I previously used is a bit overkill for our climate up here, even with my modified engine. Oddly enough I have a smoother running engine with a bit better fuel economy as well.
so...any other suggestions as to where to tap the coolant gauge? Quite interesting trying different locations as there are some very different readings!
