There is a Darlington transistor which controls fan speed, and these things last about 10 yrs or so. It is a Toshiba 2SD1525. Accept no substitutes.
See http://www.quasimotors.com for a writeup on how to replace this. Click on Procedures, then Mechanical Repair/Disassembly Procedures, then Blower motor controller. If you can solder, you can do this. The heat transfer paste is a necessity, and you must have completely flat contact between the transistor and the heat sink plate, otherwise the new transistor will not last. I would recommend removing the old transistor, clearing away excess solder so you have the holes for the terminals completely clear, bending the terminals for the new transistor appropriately, mount it to the heat sink, thread the terminals up through the holes in the circuit board, tighten it down, then solder last. Otherwise the transistor may not lie flat on the heat sink. Good luck.
