Only one thing with less lift than hot air Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 30 Jul 2003 07:46:11 In Reply to: Noticed something similar at the local airport..., Patrick in Abq, Tue, 29 Jul 2003 21:35:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That's night air over water.
Heat affects all parts of aircraft performance. On hot days helicopters have less lift - the little Robinson R22's can only take off with one person and a half-tank on hot days, two people and full tanks on cool days.
In some hotter parts of the world, including such exotic places as Arizona, commercial aircraft have to limit their take off loads. Not only does the air provide less lift to the aircraft, but the jet engine performance drops. Less lift and poor engine performance make for a lousy combination when the end of the runway is coming up.
