Adaption run...

I recently replaced my battery. I ran the car and everything seemed fine. For 2 weeks the boost levels have stayed within limits. Now all of a sudden, the boost is going waaaaayyy into the red zone and I get detonation.
I just got through checking the lines to the westgate and even pressurized the system to check operability. Everything looks and acts as it should.
I don't want to cause anymore detonation in the car and an adaption run would certainly cause that in my case. Isn't detonation harmful to the rings?
No leaks or cracks in the hoses. This has got me stumped. Should I do the adaption run and deal with the bucking?
