87 9KT Turbo problems according to my son

He's off to college now and called today. After a long weekend road trip he started his car today and said the turbo is making a loud grinding noise but was not a problem at all during the trip. The turbo gauge wouldn't move off the low end. This is according to him describing this over the phone.
What little I've read here it doesn't fit the description of turbo failure. Being he's 270 miles away and in a small western Nebraska town where they've probably never seen a Saab can someone give me a checklist of things to look for in turbo failure as well as other things to look for? I think his "hooter valve" was going bad because this summer when the weather was hot if you pushed in the clutch i.e. approaching a stop light, the engine would die. If it didn't die the RPM's dropped way down as if it were trying to die.
I'm thinking of making a road trip to see what's what with it and being mostly Saab illiterate, I'd like to go as armed as possible. Thank you in advance.
Kevin
