A separate restrictor WILL help you in this case - if you are getting this kind of vibration, then it means your hose is not acting as an effective resrictor and is possibly even the cause of the problem. As long as the restrictor has an inner diameter that's significantly smaller than that of the tube itself, then it will act as a buffer to prevent rapid pressure flutuations inside of the tube from affecting the needle.
The inner diameter of the restrictor should be NO MORE than about 1mm. If your main tube has an inner diameter that small, then its probably too thin. You may be hitting a resonance of some kind inside the main tube which, without a restrictor as a buffer before the gauge, is causing that rapid pressure fluctuation to be transferred to the needle itself.
Otherwise, a small "sputtering" leak somewhere in the intake or on the hose runnung to the gauge could also be the problem. This also might explain why you are at base-boost most of the time.
Start by trying a restrictor, you have absolutely nothing to lose. A free flowing hose with a restriction at the end will give you the smoothest most accurate readings.
Good Luck!
