Well after some long consideration I've decided to stick some money in my car as opposed to losing it in mutual funds:) I'm rapidly approaching 215,000 miles on an '89 9KT w/auto trans. I like the car and it seems to run well except for a drop in RPM when I shift into reverse when the car is cold. I change fluids and filters regularly and the car has a solid one owner mechanical history. I just want to ensure the body falls off before the drive train gives way.
In the next couple of weeks here is what I have planned:
Tires - Falken Ziex ZE-512
Motor mounts
Pre-pump
Serpentine belt
Serbentine belt idler pulley (does the tensioner shock ever go bad?)
A/C recharge/conversion
Cabin air filter
Any thing else I should consider?
I was looking under the car today and found what may be a problem. On the right side I have about 1/16" play in what I believe to be the inner tie rod. It's not the outer tie rod but rather what the outer tie rod screws on to. Is that the inner tie rod? Should I be worried? The reason I was looking for this is the car always pulls to the left and I didn't find anything loose on the left side. I had an alignment done shortly after I bought the car last year and they where able to correctly align it but it still pulled around due to the tires being pretty worn from piss poor alignment. I was able to rotate the tires around and make it pull the opposite direction just to solidify the bad tire theory. I also may be a little more paranoid since I seperated a tie rod from a ball joint on my wife's car last month while pulling into the garage.
I know the auto trans will probably be the weak link that ends my quest for half a million miles but I'll give it a shot.
I almost forgot. I need a good drivers seat and interior door panels. What model year donors should I be looking for?
Thanks for any and all suggestions.
