Hi,
I have a NA 92 in my 87 T. Keep in mind that my 2.0T is only 165hp out of the factory, and the tranny I am using is for a (2.3 NA) 150hp. The final driver IS shorter, so it revs higher at 65 than a turbo tranny would.
The real issues are drivability, realiability and necessety.
With the shorter final drive and the amount of hp and torque that your car puts out, you will not be able to prevent burning the tires, possibly even in 5th gear. Further, the NA tranny is not meant for such high torque! While I understand your point about NA trannies being better treated by previous owners, the point becomes moot with you running 200hp thru it.
All the trannies from 86-92 will bolt up. The problem is that the yearlier ones are shit (86-87), and most likely high miles. There where also improvements over theses years but only with oil drains and dipsticks the mechanics didn't change until '94.
I am not entirely sure about the logistics of rebuilding the tranny to change the final drive, or otherwise, but it seems to me that if you are willing to change the final drive then perhaps rebuilding a screwed up Turbo tranny is a better enderver.
Regards,
Roman
