I have the same year/make/model as yours, and had a similar problem. The engine would fire, but wouldn't run for more than a second or so.
Pulled fuel pump looking for bad hoses, clogged strainer, etc. Everything seemed fine. And when I used a jumper wire (lighter fuse terminal to fuel pump terminal), I could hear the pump running, but I didn't hear any "swoosh" of gasoline going through the lines.
Fuel gauge showed low but not empty. I added one gallon -- no change. Added another gallon and the car started and ran fine, and has done so ever since.
So I'd try filling up with gas first before springing for a fuel pump. BTW, on a previous 9000, the pump was noisy when I bought it, but did work. But I've also seen on this board that they sometimes fail without notice.
Anyway, it seems to me that the jumper test will at least tell you if the pump is working somewhat.
