It's not a hard job, just a bit messy. You can catch most of the fuel. Loosen the bolts and catch the drips until they almost stop, then loosen some more and catch more drips. That way you catch most of the gas.
With an old and dirty fuel filter, there will be a pressure drop across the filter, so changing it will give you more pressure up at the injectors, hopefully.
