I bought my '92 5 door turbo in '98 for $8k with 123k miles on it. But it was in really good shape. Since then I've had to rebuild the AC, replaced the heater core and blower, head gasket, timing and balance chains (while doing the head gasket), crank pully, belt/pullys/tensioner, cranshaft postition senso, and a couple CV boots.
I'm now at 208k, and it still seems to be running ok. Althought I think I may have not done a good enough job on the head gasket.
And just for kicks, I figured I could have bought a brand new Geo Metro in '98 for the same price. It would now have a value of about $1800, while the Saab still has a value of about $3500. But the Saab has been much more comfortable, and I doubt a Geo Metro can do 140 MPH. Although the tires sure cost more, and don't last as long, but it's worth it.
