I tried installing a gauge in the centre console but to be honest I wasn't happy with it as I felt it was unsafe to move my eye so far from the road to read the gauge just at the time when you need to be aware of everything around you (eg flat out). So I moved it to a pod mount on top of the dash - I thought it might look a bit boy racer but at least it would be safer. The end result looks more subtle than I thought it might and the location is perfect even in relation to the stock gauge. The only people who notice it is there are the aforementioned boy racers so it doesn't seem to affect the Saabs teflon like nature with traffic police - they see it but never seem to ticket it.
The gauge is a mid price boost/vac type - Splitfire (I was told this is a budget model by Autometer). I have been playing with an MBC and the engine cuts out at 16psi on the gauge so it seems accurate enough. Its the smaller size with a black face, red needle, silver bezel and nice green backlighting. I have mounted it in a cheap matt black pod that sits on top of the drivers side speaker grille (to one side and backed by a metal plate so that I don't destroy the grille one day - it needed one very small hole drilled between the fins so it is near invisible without the pod in place. The vac hose and lighting wires fit between the A pillar and the speaker grille housing - very tidy. The lighting can be spliced into the dimmer control in the dash so that the backlighting matches the dash at all times. The vac hose is spliced into the hose going into the back of the dash for the stock gauge. In all it took about three hours and a couple of beers to take the dashtop off, convince myself I was doing it the right way and get it looking good and put it all back together.
I have to say that the combo of a gauge and MBC is probably the cheapest fun you can have with your car - at least until you rip the tranny or blow the engine.
