If you turn the key and the drivers lock doesn't go up or down - the little metal nub that the key rotates on the cylinder has probably broken. If you lock the driver door with the key, wait a couple seconds and see if your alarm led goes on - if it does, your cylinder works except for the metal nub that is broken.

The easiest way to check is to remove the exterior door handle. First you have to remove the window guide - two bolts on side of door around latch mechanism. Above that is one of the bolts that holds the handle in place. The other bolt for the handle is inside the door at the forward edge of the handle (you'll see it). After you have both bolts out of the handle, the handle should come out, be careful of the wire for the alarm micro switch as it has some play, but don't pull real hard. Also, i say this thinking that the metal nub is no longer connected to the rest of the mechanism. If you can't pull the handle off and you see it is connected to a metal rod with a plastic cap to the back of the lock cylinder - that's not your problem. Then i don't know what to say.

If this is your problem, look inside the door and you should see a short metal rod with plastic caps on it (it's kind of straight with a U bent into it). That metal rod should be connected to metal nubs at either end. If it is broken at the lock cylinder - you have to order a new cylinder as i have found no way to take the cylinder apart to repair this part. I just ordered a new cylinder from eeuroparts.com for $40 some. They need your VIN as the part is made in Germany or Sweden and shipped here. Or if you have your key code, that helps too. The key code should be stamped on the lock cylinder (two screws hold the cylinder in the handle).

I have taken to locking the car from the rear door and depending where i am then turning on the alarm at the drivers door lock. Then when i get back, i have to go to the drivers door, unlock that to shut off the alarm, then go to the passenger side, reach over to pull the drivers lock up, and then go back to the drivers side to get in. It takes about two-three weeks to get the part. I got mine, but it was defective, so here i wait.

Last thing, when you put the window guide back in, be careful not to pinch the alarm wire.

Good luck.
Sorry this was so long.
