Double clutching means using the clutch twice between each shift of gears. It matches the input (engine) side gears to the output side gears (differential) before the 2 hook up. Say you are accelerating and shift from 2nd to 3rd. Press in the clutch and come out of 2nd. release the clutch and allow the engine to slow to the RPM that would be expected when engageing 3rd. Push in the clutch, engage 3rd, and relese the clutch.
Us farm raised kids learned this on a tractor, they don't have syncros, and grandpa would raise *&%$ if we ground a pound off gears when shiffting.
When downshifting (say 3rd to 2nd) Press the clutch to come out of 3rd, release the clutch and accelerate the engine to the RPM that you would expect when hitting 2nd. Push in the clutch, engage 2nd(the lower gear) and release, control the motor as needed.
This sounds like a lot, but with a little practice it can become second nature.
