I wouldn't necessarily trust the dealer though. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and trust the local dealer with anything, buy my car did the same thing in Lansing and the Saab dealer in Lansing was anything but competent. In fact, I found out the hard way. It took these jerks 6 days to repair a simple 45 minute job. The actual dealer didn't even stock the pulleys, nor did they give me the option to overnight the part in. Dumbasses actually let it ship from the east coast via UPS ground. Not a problem if time is not an issue, but remember I was out of town at the time and had to rent a car for business while these SOBs had my Saab.

If your idler pully bearing failed, the pulley will (and sounds like did) spin right off the hub. However the reason could be the bearing was bad, or was forced into failure because your hydraulic tensioner is out of alignment. Check all of the pulleys for play, specifically look at your tensioner to make sure the bushings haven't failed and allowed it to get out of allignment. This will cause other pulley and belt problems.

The Idler is relatively cheap, but the tensioner isn't. Don't be foolish and buy used pulleys becasue these parts are wear items and the cars in the bone yards are as old as yours and not running anymore. You might find a cheap one on ebay, but the money you will save on used will be eaten up in labor doing the job over in 6 mos. Kinda like buying used brake pads.

However if it has never been replaced, you are overdue and the labor isn't that much more to do both while the wheel liner is out. Your belt is already off and the mechanic will have easy access to the whole end of the engine. Another thing to look at is the main oil seal behind the main pulley. Ususally the culprit of annoying oil drips. Pain in the butt to get at, unless all of the above is off the engine already, then it is a 1/2 hour job and about $10 for the seal (at the most). I just recently did all of this on my 91, but I am into preventative maintenance.

Good luck
David
