Hope I am not the dumbest guy ever to report on this message board. Anyway, here is my story and I am anxiously awaiting for some recommendations. Sorry for the long writeup but may be some trivial thing is important.
I have two Saabs, a '88 900T auto and a '95 9000 Aero. The mishap was with my Aero. It has 118k miles with automatic transmission and I just got back from a 900 mile trip and the car drove and handled beautifully. This evening I tried to start the car after some local driving. The car door locking system was acting funny (as though it was trying to lock) and the temperature control system was lighting up all over the place. The voltage was around 7 or 8 and the car would not turn over. So I brought my old '88 and tried to give a boost. It was dark and the 900 hood prevents light in the front from shining inside the engine compartment. To make a long story short, I cross connected the terminals. There was some fire and smoke (in the '900 engine compartment) and I could see the jumper cable copper terminal start glowing. I checked the terminal signs before I brought the cable in but all I know is I was not smart enough to realize that I had them cross connected for about a minute or so.
Then I straightened out the wires and the car started. The voltage reading was around 14 and the car seemed to be fine. Then I noticed I could not get the clock or radio to work. Checked the fuse and it was blown. Since I tried to shut the engine off and start again 3 times and the car started every time with voltage reading around 11+, I shut the car off and went to get a fuse. I put the key in the ignition and turned it without starting the car. The voltage reading was around 11+. Then I put the fuse back in and tried to start the car. Suddenly the voltage reading was back to 7 and the car did not start again. So I have pulled the radio/clock fuse and gave a boost and the car starts and voltage is back around 12 and 13. I will try starting the car in the morning. The central locking system with the remote is not working.
My question is by cross connecting the batteries did I do any serious damage to the electrical system? I know that the electrical system in Saabs are always prone to problems. Do I need a new alternator/regulator? Any suggestions on how to go about diagnosizing the problem/s will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Sam
