it on, the check engine light should start to flash, count the number of flashes :
2 flashes - Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor
3 flashes - Intake Air Temperature sensor
4 flashes - Coolant Temperature Sensor
5 flashes - Throttle Position Sensor
6 flashes - O2 Sensor
7 flashes - Adaptation
8 flashes - Purge valve
9 flashes - ECM fault
... the number of flashes do not necessarily point at the fault, they might be triggered by a fault somewhere in the system( i.e. if it's running too lean or too rich the ECU will blame it on the 02( 6 flashes - oxygen sensor), but the real reason might lie somewhere else, vaccum leak or smth of that order :) good luck!
