Tire and Wheel Rotation Question Posted by Dan [Email] (#2459) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dan) on Sun, 14 Dec 2003 08:12:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The other day while checking out some front end problems on my 94 9K I noticed that the front wheels were mounted on the wrong side. Further investigation showed that one tire was mounted so that it would rotate in the forward direction while the other was mounted so that it would rotate in the backward direction (direction meaning the indication of the arrow on the side wall of the tire, these being Goodyear Eagle HPs of the directional rotating tread design). I purchased the tires from Sears and had them mounted there about 4 months ago and they probably have 5K miles on them now. In the past I had been told that radial tires should not be swapped from side to side during tire rotation as this might lead to tread separation and/or failure. More recently I have been told that it is now OK to swap from side to side as newer tires are of a better design. My question is whether it is OK to swap them around at this point to make the wheels and tires all rotate in their intended direction or should I assume that if I do so I am going to face problems later. My alternative game plan is to bring the car back to Sears and demand that they replace the tire which is rotating in the incorrect direction and mount all wheels and tires correctly, but since I am in the process of doing some other work on the car today it would probably save me some time if I just took care of remounting myself if it isn't going to cause problems down the road. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Dan
