The 91-92s were the best of the early model 9000s. By some measures the best ever. They're light, nimble and have rowdy, fun to drive motors.
The later model 9000s are much quieter and the TD04 inspired 5 speed Aeros have one of the best production motors that's ever been.
The drawback to the later model 9000s is that they gained 400 pounds over the early models and they have all the 'benefits' of GM's suspension tuning. The added weight also overwhelmed what were average brakes to begin with.
The later model 9000s can be made to handle and stop well, but I never have been able to recreate the nimbleness of the early models.
The 96,97,98 models have OBDC, which has proved very valuable in trouble shooting engine and emission related maladies.
Personally, I'm contemplating an Aero motor in a clean 91-92 chassis.
Good Luck
