Just thinking about what's down low, getting wet, and related to engine management. The other thought would be the NTC temp sensor, both of these are on the back side of the engine and driving would probably not get them wet. How far up in the engine does this wash go? Next would probably be the injector connectors. Can't remember off the top of my head, but does the 89 have the Crank Position Sensor on the balancer? If so, it could have a crack that lets the water screw up the timing, and is the under wash done when the engine is not running?... Just a few late night thoughts...
