Before you suspect a leak or add refridgerant, you need to invest in a service manifold. This is a pair of gauges, hoses, and valves to test and service the system. And you can add "gas" without the system operating, just put the can in a bucket of hot water. BUT!!!! you can overcharge and blow the high pressure relief or damage the compressor. Before checking the charge, check the electrical. The positive connector at the A/C relay is known to cause problems. I got a steal on a 9k cause the seller was told the A/C was shot and quoted $1000 plus,July in Savannah Georgia. I cleaned the terminals at the A/C relay and it is still working. I have a scan of the factory wire diagram, e-mail me and I can send it to you if you want.
