Steve, I may (probably) not be the best person to help you with this, but I did just do it on my '92 9000, which is almost identical to yours.
There are two bolts holding the alternator on which you can access from the wheelwell after removing the serp belt. My Haynes manual suggested un-bolting the power steering pump from its bracket to allow it to drop down to make room to get the alternator out after you get the two bolts loose. You can remove the bottom alternator bolt but the top one will not come all the way out. There is a notch in the top attach point that will allow you to wiggle the alternator away from its attach point. I also removed the bracket that holds the power steering pump (4 bolts) and the upright brace that runs from the sub-frame to the wheel well. With those out, there is plenty of room to get the alternator out. Another advantage to doing this is there is plenty of room to clean up that area of the engine before re-installing the alternator.
The alternator is a very tight fit so you have to wiggle it to get it loose from its bracket. Someone on this board suggested slightly fliling the alternator and lubing it before you go back in. Otherwise it takes some serious muscle to get it back in place.
When you finally do start to reassamble, rember to put the top bolt part way in the alternator as you cannot get it in once the alternator is in place.
It's Christmas Eve, and I'm on my second Gin and Tonic, so if I've missed anything or don't make much sense, don't hesitate to ask again.
Cheers.
