I also have an 89s as well as an 88s parts car. Both are EZK but the 88(like your 87 engine) has the hall effect sensor in the distributor. I've wondered if the feed to the ecu was the same as with the crank trigger which would allow any combination of sensor and ecu. I read through what EZK stuff I could find on the Townsend site(http://68.222.77.193/electrical_system_folder/halleffecttest.htm) but couldn't tell for sure. The difference in speed between the crank and distributor is apparently resolved by the number of slots on the shutter wheel but I don't know if the pulses are compatible.
If this worked you wouldn't need to swap in the cps.
