I am replacing the hatch struts on our 93 because they have become marginal in cold weather. I noticed that on this car, they are mounted with the cylinder housing part towards the hatch, which puts its "UP" label in the uppermost position when the hatch is open and in the downward position with the hatch closed. But on our 94 Aero, the struts are mounted upside down (can part towards the body), so the "UP" points down with the hatch open. Neither car has ever had the struts replaced. Other observations:
Cylinder towards hatch: 94 9000 brochure, Saab shop manual, 93 & 94 hood struts
Cylinder towards body: 94 900 brochure, 95 900 & 9000 brochures
The new struts don't have an "UP" label. It probably doesn't matter, but I just find it interesting that Saab appears to have changed the direction of mounting in the later models. Possible factors might be an unsprung weight advantage or where the oil rests most of the time. Any thoughts?
