People that bought the early turbos had a bunch of snivels....things like 'too much turbo lag', 'too coarse' and 'too noisy'.
Saab engineers went to work on all of it;
Trionic addresses the turbo lag.
Balance shafts dampen out the coarseness.
Considerable amounts of sound deadening materials cut the noise.
Personally I never had any problems with any of it. Having raced 2 stroke dirt bikes, noise and pipey motors are nothing new to me. Saab, however, was after the luxury sedan market so the later 9000s did their best to hide the turbo noise and characteristics from the driver.
