CS anti lock brakes

Hi
My sones car has for years had the anti brake light come on itermitently. There does not seem to be any pattern to why it comes on when it does. Seldom does there seem to be any change in braking although several times I have experienced an early onset of the anti lock pumping. My son says over the last year he has had two in=cidents of brakes sort of going away for a second so He has become an anti tailgate guy. I am noticing a pronounced noise like the motor cyclying for the anti lock mechanism behind the dash. Seems to occur more frequestly when cold.

Does anyone have any thoughts?
What is involved with replacing the guts of the antilock mechanism which pumps and releases the brakes.
Would a salvaged one be wise or is one getting into the same can of worms
lastly this is a 93 CS non turbo. What is the interchangability?
