Also be sure to check the diaphragm of the vacuum advance/retard unit on the distributor on your car (1986). They rupture with age, can cause a vacuum leak and change the timing, both of which can contribute to your problem. To test for a leak, you just need to suck gently on a hose attached to the fitting. A "temporary" fix is to plug the hose with a screw, check and reset the timing.
