Elbow deep-Need starter help

I have been working on this strter issue for the last 3 weekends so i am very frustrated:
First, i got a used starter at the junk yard, started it in car before i removed, so i know it worked. Removed existing starter becasue the solenoid would quit mid way through starting. So i throw the new (used) starter in and now i have nothing. I have both bolts on tight, have the two cables on the positive pole and have the wire attached to the tab closes to engine. Nothing. Jumped car nothing. No click-click-click, just plain nothing.
So today i removed starter and started from scratch. Put the starter on the bench, with battery charger. Put neg on housing, positive on bolt, and tied a 16 wire to the tab. Touch other end of wire to positive and solenoid made noise but did not turn. SO i tryed the orginial starter and had same results.
Where do i go from here. My wife has put more miles on my new-to-me 2000 aero than i have. I need to get her back into the 9000 today, becasue i am leaving on a business trip Monday, and i need the aero.
PLease advise
