and also dangerous because they do not even come close to providing equal brightness over a wide dispersion angle like a standard bulb. LED bulbs may provide a brighter light, but its projected at a very narrow angle (even the web site Lu listed states that the viewing angle is only 25 degrees).
A standard bulb procuces an even sphere of light, and the surrounding refector and plastic lens cover is designed to enhance this. An LED retrofit bulb cannot be effective behind this type of lens.
On all of the car brands that sell new models with LED brake lights (BMW, AUDI, TOYOTA and CADILLAC to name a few) you will notice a large number of LEDs spaced out over a wide area, with each bulb surrounded by its own little reflector. This configuration allows the lights to comply with government regulations that define brightness and angle of visibility.
Using LED retrofit lights is dangerous, just like darkening the lens covers, because it tampers with a fundamental safety system that is designed to allow you to communicate with other drivers.
Oh well!

P.S.
I recently saw an older Jetta where the driver had replaced all the rear bulbs with LED retrofits - not only were the lights very dim, they also looked like s**t. It seems there are no limits to the stupidity of young male drivers.
