This method is for people who find themselves with a shot
front hydralic motor mount, and can't fix it correctly
immediatly. It is a variation of Townsend's recommended mount modification. (See SaabMaster site)
About a week ago I started noticing an engine hop when braking.
I looked up the symptoms, and found it was probably the forward
hydralic motor mount. I checked mine, and it was burst, I could
see the cracks in the rubber. It was late this afternoon, sun
almost down, so I improvised this solution to the jerking of the
engine during shifts (my 9000 is automatic)
I took a piece of heater hose I had in the garage, cut off about an
inch and a quarter, slid it into the space between the mount and the
limiting bracket. I placed it at 180 degrees to the limiting bracket,
and put a couple of nylon zip ties through the tubing and over the
limiting bracket. I test drove the car, and both the upshifts and
downshifts were smooth as silk.
This will get me through till next weekend when I will have time to
replace the motor mount. The engine hopping during shifts was driving me
nuts, so this rocks. It occurs to me that this is also a way to see if
replacing the forward motor mount would cure the problem without actually
doing it. Yes, it makes a tiny difference in vibration, but if I had used
a hose slighly smaller, like high quality garden hose for instance, I don't think there would be constant contact between mount and limiter,
nor extra vibration.
I'll take the slight extra vibration over the bouncing engine myself.
Maybe 1/2" heater hose would also be better, the optimal tubing would
not touch the mount while car is parked.
I felt this was an important emergency fix because I have read on Quasi's
site that leaving that mount broken will cause the other mounts to fail.
I can see why that would happen.
It took about five minutes.
Ok, flame away if you think my idea is bad. I'd like to hear
what the more learned Saabites think.
