I experienced a similar problem to what you describe with my 95 CSE.
The small PCV check valve near the top of the valve cover and the breather nipple (located near the word SAAB) failed on my car, causing the crankcase to pressurize, and eventually foul the plugs (hence the oil). If the breather nipple has fallen out of the valve cover that could be where the oil spray came from. I'd check this out before taking the car to a dealer/mechanic. The parts are around $30 and its a cinch to replace them (~15 min for a novice DIYer).
Hope this helps....
Mike
