Consequence of not replacing the auto tranny springs

The auto tranny on my MY95 9000CS 2.0 Ecopower still shifts flawlessly and quickly, even after 80,000 km and 9 years of use in the tropics.
Other than annual change of ATF, the only repair that it required was a replacement of the "gear shift spring kit" at 40,000km in 1999. The problem was gear shifting normally, but car lacking power at low rpm. The problem disappeared after the replacement.
Now the problem surfaces again at 80,000 km. Other than the degrading in performance at low rpm which I can live with, can anyone please tell me if permanent damage to the auto tranny can be inflicted if I don't replace the springs?
My impression from reading Ari's posts is that if there is "hard knocking" during gear shift, bits of metal are actually being knocked off in the tranny to cause further damage later. Therefore repair must be carried out ASAP. But I don't have this problem at all.
