5 speed transmission bearing failure question

About 8 years ago I towed my '92 9000 behind my motor home for about 20,000 miles. I had contacted Saab USA in Atlanta before doing it, and they told me there would be no problem, just leave it in neutral, and turn the ignition key enough to unlock the steering column. About two years and 20,000 miles after I stopped towing the car, the 5 speed transmission, started howling, and needed some bearings. I don't remember which ones. That was 60,000 miles ago, and the transmission has been fine ever since.
Now, I'm considering another motor home and and would like to tow the old '92 again, since it still has the tow bar receiver. (which, by the way, is neatly hidden behind the fog light covers. the straight 9000 did not come with fog lights. there are just plastic covers to hide the holes) I'm wondering if the earlier bearing failure could have been caused by a lack of lubrication while being towed. Is it possible that towing with the transmission in neutral somehow prevented splash lubrication to the bearings and caused the failure?
Thanks
